Tuesday, February 16, 2016

LAWRENCE — Dean Mahesh Daas has announced the appointment of Jeremy Shellhorn, associate professor of design, as the new associate dean for strategic initiatives beginning Feb. 28 for the University of Kansas School of Architecture, Design & Planning. Prior to this appointment he served as the assistant chair of the Department of Design.

In the newly created position, Shellhorn will play a major role in developing the school’s strategic communications campaigns, coordinating institutional identity development and branding, and building entrepreneurial initiatives.

“Jeremy is a designer, thought leader, collaborator, strategist and teacher with immense talent," Daas said. “We are fortunate to have his expertise to serve the school at this exciting juncture. His addition to our leadership team will greatly expand capacity to fulfill our school’s vision as a pioneering force for global impact through design.”

Shellhorn began teaching design at KU in 2006. While at KU he has won the Byron T. Shutz Excellence in Teaching Award and was a First-Year Experience Faculty Fellow. He was also awarded a Golden Apple teaching award by the Dallas Society of Visual Communications.

Before coming to KU, he was an assistant professor at Herron School of Art and Design at Indiana University in Indianapolis. He began his career professionally as an art director at EAT Advertising + Design in Kansas City.

He received his bachelor's degree of fine arts from KU in 1999 and a master's degree in design from North Carolina State University in 2003.

“Almost every day for the past 10 years I’ve had the privilege of working with our incredibly talented students and collaborating with amazing colleagues,” Shellhorn said.

“Ours is an inspired school of design thinking and making,” he said. “I’m excited to have the opportunity to help tell the story of what we do with the university community and the world, and to develop entrepreneurial initiatives that will strengthen the school’s relationships with professionals, communities and industry.”
