The Hallmark Symposium Lecture Series

The Hallmark Symposium Lecture Series was established in 1984 through the generosity of the Hallmark Corporate Foundation with the goal and intention of enriching the education of students at the University of Kansas and in support of those in particular in the Department of Design through exposure to designers, artists and educators from the United States and abroad. During these nearly 30+ years of collaboration, approximately 10,000 students have been exposed to these rich and various array of practitioners.

January 25: Andrew Blauvelt
Andrew Blauvelt joined Cranbrook Art Museum as director in October of 2015. Previously he served as the Senior Curator, Design, Research, and Publishing at the Walker Art Center, a position he held since 2013. From 2010 to 2013, he served as the Walker’s Chief of Communications and Audience Engagement, overseeing the design, marketing, public relations, education, and new media departments and the development of its online publishing initiatives, including its award-winning website and online collections research catalogue. He served as the Walker’s Design Director and Curator from 1998–2010, developing and overseeing the brand identity of the organization and organizing touring exhibitions. A practicing graphic designer for more than 20 years, his work has received over 100 design awards, including several nominations for the Chrysler Award for Design Innovation and the National Design Awards in Communications Design

February 8: Troy Scillian
Troy graduated with a degree in Visual Communications from the University of Kansas. Since then he has worked with some of the world’s biggest brands (McDonald's, Coca-Cola, Monster.com) and some super tiny start-ups. He founded his own advertising agency, Coffee/Black which merged it with a big one where he leads a large creative department. Today, he is  Executive Creative Director at Universal Orlando Resort.
 
His friends say Troy has the best job in advertising. At Universal Orlando Resort (home to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, Despicable Me Minion Mayhem, Jurassic Park, and much more) he leads a talented team of creatives who craft the words and pictures to tell the story of that incredible place. With three theme parks, a growing number of hotels, and the dining and entertainment district of CityWalk, there is always something new to tell the world. And it is always pretty damn cool.

February 22: Emily Pilloton
Emily Pilloton is a designer, builder, educator, author, and founder of the nonprofit design agency Project H Design. Using architecture and design as a vehicle for social justice and public education, she works alongside youth ages 9-18 both in and out of school to bring to life public architecture projects that transform lives and communities. She is particularly invested in using design as a creative voice for young girls and students of color to build change in their own lives and has mentored over 200 young girls ages 9-17 towards college and careers in STEM-related areas. Her work within public education has catalyzed schools, teachers, leaders, and school districts to reinvent their pedagogy around creativity and design, connected to core subject content. She has built a farmers market with high school students, a playhouse with and for the daughters of abused mothers, a school library by the hands of its own middle school students, and microhomes for a transitional housing agency.

March 8: RaMell Ross
Ross received a BA in English and sociology from Georgetown University and an MFA from the Rhode Island School of Design. His photographs have been exhibited in the U.S. and internationally, and published in the New York Times, the Washington Post, Oxford American, and on CNN, while his writing has appeared in the New York Times, Huffington Post, and ESPN. His feature film Idiom; Hale County This Morning, This Evening, has received funding from the Sundance Institute, Tribeca Film Institute, and a Garrett Scott Documentary Development Grant. In 2015, he was part of Filmmaker Magazine’s “25 New Faces of Independent Film.” Also in 2015, he was a Sundance Institute New Frontier Artist in Residence at the MIT Media Lab.

March 29: Lindsey Yankey
I grew up in rural Kansas playing outside, painting, drawing, and playing sports. I studied Illustration at the University of Kansas and am currently living in Lawrence, KS with my husband, cat, dog, and our jungle of plants. I find inspiration in nature, animals, books, people, and traveling. My illustrations are made with a variety of materials. I love the mouthwatering juiciness of oil paint, the independence watercolor, the history of found paper, the simplicity of pencil and pen, and all the rabbit holes that are revealed by carving linoleum block to create pattern and repetition. 

April 12: Matt Wegerer
Whiskey Design is a place that was founded under one simple motto,“Create work that RAISE A RUCKUS.” At Whiskey, we’re fueled by great work. We live it. We breathe it. We drink it down. Our rowdiness is a good thing. It results in bold, brash and unconventional designs that get brands noticed. Ready to take a shot at something great? Well, we’re ready when you are.

April 26: Louisa Bertman
Louisa Bertman is an award-winning new media storyteller with a deep interest in creative non-fiction animated shorts.  Embracing the intersection of art, technology and social media she is the ultimate creative hybrid. Her work includes researching, writing, illustrating, animating, directing, editing, and producing visual narrative shorts regarding social and political relevance.
