Credit/No Credit

For students admitted to majors in the Department of Design (Illustration & Animation, Industrial Design, Photography, and Visual Communication Design) and students pursuing the Photography Minor, the option of electing Credit/No Credit for certain fall 2020 courses reopened on December 21, 2020. The option to elect Credit/No Credit for certain spring 2021 courses will become available starting May 24, 2021. Check out the key details below:

What is Credit/No Credit?

Electing Credit/No Credit for a qualifying course means that your final grade in that course will be automatically converted to either “CR” or “NC.” If you elect Credit/No Credit for a course and earn a semester grade of “C-“ or better in that course, the grade will convert to “CR” and it will count toward your credit hours for the semester and toward the requirements of your degree. If you elect Credit/No Credit for a qualifying course and earn a semester grade of “D+” or lower in that course, the grade will convert to “NC” and it won’t count toward your credit hours for the semester or toward the requirements of your degree. Either way, your grade in that course would no longer count toward your GPA.

You may or may not be able to elect Credit/No Credit for a given course depending on restrictions specific to students in your major and/or minor.

What courses qualify for Credit/No Credit?

The following applies only to students admitted to majors in the Department of Design. Students admitted to other majors should consult the academic advising office for their program (listed below).

Students with a major in the Department of Design can elect Credit/No Credit for any course(s) that aren't fulfilling part of the Foundation Studies or Major Studies requirements of your degree (see next point). You can also elect Credit/No Credit for as many courses as you'd like for fall 2020 and for spring 2021.

Students pursuing the Photography Minor can elect Credit/No Credit for any fall 2020 and spring 2021 courses required for the Photography Minor.

If you have a major and/or minor beyond the Department of Design and you're considering electing Credit/No Credit for a fall 2020 and/or spring 2021 course, you should check with the academic advising/student services office(s) most relevant to your area(s) of study to verify whether or not you would be able to count that course would then count toward the requirements of that major/minor.

What courses do not qualify for Credit/No Credit?

The following applies only to students admitted to majors in the Department of Design. Students admitted to other majors should consult the academic advising office for their program (listed below).
